About Roy Sommer

Roy Sommer is Professor of English and the director of the Center for Graduate Studies at the University of Wuppertal. He is the co-founder, with Michael Scheffel and Matías Martínez, of the interdisciplinary Center for Narrative Research at Wuppertal, and has been a member of the Executive Board since 2007. He has been a member of the European Narratology Network since 2009, and of the Narrative Society since 2011.

Roy Sommer is the author of two monographs, a narratological study of multicultural British fiction (Fictions of Migration, 2001) and a history of British comedy (Von Shakespeare bis Monty Python, 2011). He has co-edited four books, including Narratology in the Age of Interdisciplinary Narrative Research (2009), with Sandra Heinen. He has published more than forty book chapters and journal articles that reflect his interest in fictional and factual storytelling and narrative theory.

He is the co-editor of DIEGESIS, a bilingual open access journal and the first interdisciplinary journal dedicated to narrative research that provides free online access to full-text articles and reviews. Hosted by the library of the University of Wuppertal and edited by senior members of the university's Center for Narrative Research, DIEGESIS intends to become the leading resource for cutting-edge theoretical and empirical work on narrative, narrativity and storytelling in all media, contexts and applications, from fiction to film, from literature to conversation, from journalism to social networks.

Roy Sommer is scientific coordinator of “Crises as Opportunities: Towards a Level Telling Field on Migration and a New Narrative of Successful Integration.” This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101004945.
